About Peggy Leung, M.D.
I am a primary care physician and medical educator with a passion for training the next generation of physicians while providing compassionate, comprehensive care to diverse patient populations. My clinical practice focuses on serving underserved communities, and I am deeply committed to addressing health equity and social determinants of health through both patient care and innovative educational curricula. I believe that excellent primary care requires not only clinical expertise but also an understanding of the social, economic and cultural factors that influence health outcomes.
Dr. Peggy Leung is an Assistant Professor in Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at 91Âé¶¹¾«Æ· and a Primary Care Physician at 91Âé¶¹¾«Æ· Internal Medicine Associates (WCIMA), where she provides care to diverse patient populations. Dr. Leung earned her M.D. from the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and completed her Internal Medicine-Primary Care Track Residency at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital-91Âé¶¹¾«Æ·, where she additionally served as Ambulatory Chief Resident. Her current medical education leadership roles include Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency program as well as co-Program Director for the Primary Care Track within the Internal Medicine Residency at NewYork Presbyterian Hospital-91Âé¶¹¾«Æ·.
As an educator, Dr. Leung has developed curricula addressing health equity, social determinants of health, and professional identity formation through reflective practice for trainees. Her educational work extends beyond traditional hospital/ambulatory medical settings through her leadership of the Patient Empowerment Series at community organizations, including the Fountain House, where she trains residents to communicate, educate, and empower populations with vulnerable needs about health, healthcare navigation, and patient rights. She has additionally served on education committees for national/ global health professional organizations like the Society of General Internal Medicine.
Dr. Leung's research interests focus on medical education and improving access to care for underserved populations. She has conducted research on home care workers and heart failure management, examining the perspectives and educational needs of this critical workforce. Her work has been published in prominent journals including JAMA, Journal of General Internal Medicine, and Academic Medicine.
In addition to her leadership roles, Dr. Leung maintains an active clinical practice while serving as a mentor for medical students, residents, and junior faculty. Her bilingual abilities (English, Cantonese) enable her to communicate and provide care to diverse patient populations. Through her integrated approach to clinical care, education, and research, Dr. Leung aims to advance the field of primary care medicine while training compassionate, skilled physicians committed to serving all members of society.
